Workshop on Paleozoic Clastic Gas Reservoirs of the Gulf, March 14-15, 2009 This workshop has been performed under the patronage of HE Dr. Abdul-Hussain Bin Ali Mirza, Minister of Oil & Gas Affairs and Chairman of NOGA, Kingdom of Bahrain, who did the welcome greetings to the participants during dinner. The timing of the workshop coincides with the Bahrain Bid Round that was announced last year by HE. The workshop covers the most recent studies by the experts on the deep Paleozoic Reservoirs of the Gulf. The area contains more than 40% of the Gas reserves and more than 50% of oil reserves worldwide, accordingly, the performance of such workshop like this one and others that are very focused are necessary from time to time. The Vice President of Petroleum Engineering and Development of Saudi Aramco was the keynote speaker and gave an overview of his experience about the Deep Gas Exploration. This workshop is different from the large conferences like the MEOS and GEO in that it is so specialized and focused while other conferences are general and include many different disciplines. From there, idea of focused workshops has stemmed to concentrate and focus the effort, exchange the ideas, technologies and studies on limited subjects to be applied later at work. This workshop is the second one of its type that the Office of Sandroses has organized in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The first one was performed last November 2007, about the Khuff Reservoir that has the largest gas reserves in the Gulf but the Gas has some sulphur sometimes. This workshop contains a number of natural sweet (no sulphur) Gas Clastic Reservoirs. Some of the important reservoirs are: Unayzah, Jauf, Tawil, Sarah, Mid Qusaiba Sand and Saq. The workshop includes 32 studies divided into four sessions, first, the Paleozoic Geology and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Clastic Reservoirs; second, the Diagenesis and Predictions of the Gas Reservoirs; third one, is the Tight Gas Challenges and the fourth one is the Displays of the Cores from the Unazah Reservoirs from three countries, Saudi Arabia by Saudi Aramco; Kingdom of Bahrain by BAPCO and UAE by ADNOC. The displays of cores will be discussed and the experts of each countries will speak and explain while examining the cores. In addition, there are some posters included in the workshop on related subjects. The presentations or studies are coming here from different companies and institutes, these companies are Saudi Aramco with 12 papers; BAPCO with 2 papers; University of King Saud with one paper; BRGM, France: one paper; SRAK: one paper; SSG: (Chinese company in KSA): one paper; PDO, Oman: one paper; Georo Mechanics, USA and UAE: 2 papers, USGS: one paper; University of Mousel and Salahuddin, Iraq: 3 papers; Luksar in KSA: 2 papers; Halliburton: 2 papers; HESS, USA: 1 paper and one paper from the Middle East Geological Studies Office. There are 120 participants representing 34 companies, are as follows: GeoMechanics International, SRAK, Saudi Aramco, US. Geological Survey, ADNOC, Luksar, Mousel University, Salahuddin University, PDO, BAPCO, University of King Saud, M.E.G.E., SSGL, HESS Corporation, BRGM, Halliburton, ENI, Chevron, Baker Hughes, Dragon Oil, ADMA, StatoilHydro, REPSOL, Abdelhadi Al-Qahtani & Sons, ADC, CNR, GDF, Suez, ExxonMobil, KFUPM, TOTAL, IRES Ltd., Schlumberger, Shell and RXT. The companies are from 12 countries, KSA, USA, UAE, OMAN, Kuwait, France, UK, Holland and Canada, Iraq, Italy and Norway. The Office of Sandroses thanks the companies that have sponsored the workshop, these companies are: Saudi Aramco (Titanium), BAPCO and Halliburton (Platinum), Luksar and HESS (Gold), and silver sponsorship contributors are Srak, Dragon, Adnoc, SSG, ADC, Tareq Al-Qahtani & Bros., StatoilHydro, Makamin and Drilling Info. Also thanks are extended to the Bahrain Geosciences Society (BGS) and Dhahran Geosciences Society (DGS) for their support.
